Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi is one of those quiet, cozy books that gently pulls you into its world while also leaving you with something to reflect on.
The story takes place in a small café in Tokyo with a very unusual feature: under certain conditions, customers can travel back in time. However, there are strict rules. One of the most important points is that the trip can last only until the coffee in their cup gets cold, hence the book's title. Another crucial rule is that no matter what happens during the visit to the past, the present cannot be changed.
The novel follows several different characters who each decide to take this journey. Every story explores a different relationship between lovers, family members, or friends, and the emotions tied to things left unsaid or moments that can never truly be relived.
What I loved most about this book is how heartwarming and emotional it is at the same time. It’s a cozy read, but it also carries a quiet depth. Each story reminds us that while we may wish to revisit the past, we cannot change it. Instead, the real value lies in understanding it and learning to accept it.
The writing feels gentle and intimate, and the characters quickly become easy to care about. The idea behind the story is simple but very powerful, and it allows the book to explore themes like regret, forgiveness, love, and acceptance in a very touching way.
There’s something about Japanese literature that often creates this calm and reflective atmosphere, and this book captures that feeling beautifully. It’s the kind of book that feels comforting while still making you emotional.
Overall, this was a wonderful and memorable read. Cozy, thoughtful, and deeply heartwarming. I absolutely loved it.
